An introduction to

Intergenerational Healing

“Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua”

I walk backwards into the future with my eyes fixed on my past.

Intergenerational Trauma

The phenomenon where the experiences of past generations can influence the behaviour, emotions, and well-being of future generations.

Holocaust survivors, FKBP5 gene - stress related gene linking to PTSD and depression also seen in children.

(Yeduha et al., 2016)

How can we honour & neutralise the impacts of intergenerational trauma.

And leave honouring the strengths & gifts these experiences gave us?

My lesson: if something seems too heavy for just this lifetime could it be intergenerational?

  • Emotions feel heavy, stuck & do not move after multiple havening sessions.

  • Blocking belief, conscious awareness this was mirrored from parent.

  • Known incident from family lineage with some influence on person today.

Before we go into the past…

We need to create support & safety

Invite any people or animals past, present or future with your highest good into the room.

Image, energy, presence, light, knowing or if there’s nothing thats okay

Curious Questions

“Did this come from someone else?”

“Who did it come from?”

“Where or who did you see this pattern in?”

Metaphor Havening

Create an image or picture that represents your connection to what you’re currently experiencing and who / where this might have come from…

  • What can you see, feel, think?

  • Who is this linked pattern linked to?

  • Where abouts are they in relationship to you?

  • How are they attached to you and where is it attached in your body? i.e. cord, string, line

  • How far back does it go? Is there anyone or anything else this is attached to or coming from?

  • What else can you see in the surroundings of the picture?

Stop Havening

Return to metaphor & activate all sub-modalities

Repeat process until neutral & there’s balance & order

Other processes to consider after neutralising metaphor

Advanced / Novel Protocol & should not be used unless supervised

Close off all spaces you’ve opened!

  • If inviting ancestors into space, offer they can stay with you or return to where they’ve come from

  • Bring them back to the present moment: the past is done for today, take two breaths and connect back to your present body.

  • Build resilience in the future,

This can get sci-fi & spiritual.

Advise not to adventure into the unknown unless you have support & safety for practitioner & clients.

  • Do not try it unsupervised.

  • Needs to be explained and culturally appropriate

  • Do not use with vulnerable clients.

  • One lifetime of trauma is enough for most.

  • This isn’t for everyone (both practitioner & client).

Demonstration

Takeaways for Intergenerational Healing

  • This is an advanced and experimental protocol

  • Most people there is enough trauma in this lifetime

  • Novel & needs supervision as we develop this space

  • Everything that is opened needs closing
